Perfectionist Bellamy demands improvement

Oct 13 2006

CRAIG BELLAMY admits he’s still pondering over what might have been after a rollercoaster week for Wales.

Bellamy’s experience as stand-in skipper was marked by one of Wales’ worst ever defeats, quickly followed by the first points of this qualifying campaign.

Qualification for the finals is already looking like a more than daunting task just two months into the campaign, but the Liverpool striker insisted the midweek win against Cyprus at least keeps the ball rolling going into March’s trip to Dublin and Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland.

Yet 27-year-old Bellamy can’t escape thinking how different the outlook had been if individual errors hadn’t set up the Slovakia shocker last Saturday.

“The win over Cyprus keeps us in there,” he said.

“It’s only three points but it’s certainly better than none.

“But we have to admit three points from three games isn’t great but it’s still nice to get a start and with this young squad it’s good to have an opportunity to build on.

“We wanted a good performance and a good result and although Slovakia will never be wiped out at least we had a good response.
