Qualifying hopes are grim now - Bellamy

Oct 9 2006

by Mark Currie, Daily Post

WALES captain Craig Bellamy said Saturday’s 5-1 defeat by Slovakia was one of the low points of his career and admitted that hopes for a successful European Championship campaign were now hanging by a thread.

“I’m not going to lie – already our hopes of qualifying are not good,” he said afterwards.

“Leading the team out today was one of my career high-points but walking back in after a 5-1 defeat is definitely a low point.

“We conceded some bad goals, the like of which I haven’t seen from Wales for a long time. I didn’t even think Slovakia were a particularly good team and after about 15 minutes of the game I felt we could turn them over.

“But you can’t give away stupid goals like we did at any decent level of football.

“Now we have got to beat Cyprus on Wednesday and we’re lucky to have a game immediately after this defeat. Wednesday will be the last chance to put our campaign back on track.”

Bellamy admitted Wales had been hamstrung by the absence of key players through injury and added: “We don’t have a big squad and we have a lot of lads who are not playing regular first team football.
