WALES boss John Toshack yesterday vowed to stick with his young players, insisting that the nation’s future fortunes rest in their hands. Having had 48 hours to digest the implications of Saturday’s 5-1 European Championship defeat by Slovakia at the Millennium Stadium, the Wales boss said there would not be wholesale changes in either personnel or tactics for the visit of Cyprus tomorrow – now a must-win match for his depleted squad. But Toshack could give 18-year-old David Cotterill a place in the starting line-up, ahead of striker Robert Earnshaw. And he also hinted that 39-year old veteran goalkeeper Paul Jones, who was at fault for at least two of Saturday’s avalanche of goals, might lose out to either Lewis Price or Jason Brown. “That’s possibly one of the things we are looking at,” he said. “There may be a change or not and we know we have limitations, with five players missing for various reasons. “We had to make changes from the side that against played the Czech Republic so we knew it was not going to be easy and we suffered a bad result. “But we knew when we took the job it was not going to be easy and I don’t know how long it will take to get it right. It’s 50 years since Wales qualified for the finals of a major tournament and it might take that long again. |
