CAERNARFONSHIRE claimed the Welsh Inter-Counties title for the second time in four years when their aggregate total of 747 left them six strokes clear of Glamorganshire at a windswept Borth & Ynyslas. The difference in conditions from last year is reflected in the scores, with last year's winning score of 695 by Gwent no less than 52 strokes better than Caernarfon's this time. Caernarfon's North Wales county players were steady in the morning, with all six of their players breaking 80. Paul Roberts from the North Wales club in Llandudno was best with a 73, Gareth Dobson-Jones of Porthmadog and Mark Wyn Jones from Royal St David's both shot 74, captain Neil Lloyd from the Caernarfon club and Conwy's Gareth Williams each posted 75, and James Gresty's 78 was the non- counting score. Their morning total of 371 left them just a stroke ahead of Glamorganshire, then in the afternoon when the wind had got even stronger, they totalled 376 with all but Gresty breaking 80. Roberts added a 74 along with Wyn Jones, Dobson-Jones had a 75, Lloyd a 76 and Williams a 77 to clinch the title. The only player to break 70 in the competition was Glamorganshire's Lee Thomas, who shot a 69 in the afternoon, 10 strokes better than his morning round. His 148 total left him three behind Dyfed's Richard Scott from the Haverforwest club, who shot 70-75 to win the individual competition and help his county to third place on 761. Second in the individual competition was Anglesey player Tony Blackwell from Bull Bay who scored 72-74 . Anglesey finished fourth on 763, Gwent were fifth on 765, Flintshire sixth on 782 and Denbighshire last on 788.
