RISING star Beth Davies went the right way towards making a big impression when she attended her first warm weather training session. Beth, 16, from Gwernaffield, travelled to Spain with five other members of the Wales Girls B squad for a fine tuning weekend. While the four-day trip starting last Thursday was a success, the real highlight came when Beth struck a hole-in-one. 'It was on a par three on Friday and it was the first one I've had,' explained Davies, who swept the board at Mold Golf Club last season in the women's events. It was certainly bound to catch the eye of coach Christine Lang-ford. The coaching session was held at the Desert Springs golf resort in Almeria and was a welcome break from the freezing temperatures that have struck Britain recently. 'There's normally 12 of us who have coaching at Celtic Manor, but this is the first time I've been away for warm weather training,' added Davies. 'It was better conditions for us and it gave me a chance to get to know the coach and for her to get to know how I was hitting the ball and what I need to improve on.' Beth currently plays off a five handicap but might one day join the ranks of professional women's golf. 'It is something I've thought about, but we'll just have to see if it happens,' said Davies. nThe March Medal opened the season at Flint Golf Club, and there was a great competitive debut for Gordon Burrows. Taking part in Division Three he finished in first place with 96-25-71, beating Derek Oldfield into second on 91-19-72 and Doug Ellis third with 95-21-74.
