BEN Mackriell is proving to be one of the most talented young players in the country. The 17-year-old from Halkyn has been showcasing his skills this week in the Under 18s Home Nations tournament in Nottingham. Although born across the border in England, Ben donned the red of Wales, having lived in the Principality for the past five years. He came to this decision as it was in Wales where he developed his love of the game. Taking up the sport as a 14-year-old, Ben's talents were honed at Northop Hall, where he was given encouragement by the club's late chairman Glyn Davies. The Mold Alun pupil's ability was spotted by Welsh team bosses, who called him up despite only having 18 months' playing experience. This week's event is the biggest Ben has competed in, but his ambitions do not stop there. He said: 'The ultimate goal for me is to be in the squad for next year's European Championships, which takes place in Milan in Italy. It's an U18s squad, so I'll still be able to play in it, but after that I'll hopefully move up the U21s. 'There's also a Great Britain U20s team being created so if I can keep playing well that is something I'd definitely like to be involved in.' Ben - who is sponsored by hockey manufacturers Malik - will return to playing club hockey in September, but not with the Hall. He has chosen to sign for their big rivals Wrexham. Ben said: 'I just felt my development would improve if I went to Wrexham. They've got players in the Wales U18s and U21s squads, so I feel going there could really help me as a player. 'I enjoyed my time at Northop Hall but I felt this was best for my career.' If Ben makes the starting line-up for Wrexham's opening game of the 2006-07 season, it will give him a quick chance to meet up with his old team-mates, as the Plas Coch outfit have been handed a home date with none other than the Hall. * Ben is looking for sponsorship.
