JOE CALZAGHE will be rooting for Glen Johnson when he takes on Clinton Woods in Bolton on Saturday night. The Welsh fighter has reached a provisional agreement to move up to light-heavyweight and meet the Jamaican veteran. Johnson, 37, bids to reclaim the IBF title from Woods at the Bolton Arena this weekend. Should he emerge victorious, Calzaghe is likely to realise his ambition of stepping up in weight to challenge for a world belt. Calzaghe unified the WBO and IBF super-middleweight belts with a masterful victory against American Jeff Lacy earlier this year. He will finally return to the ring in October against Cameroon's Sakio Bika. Providing he is victorious against the little known African, promoter Frank Warren is lining up a "mega-fight" in February which will be against Johnson if he beats Yorkshireman Woods, 34, on Saturday. Calzaghe is taking nothing for granted, however, insisting the light-heavyweight showdown is a "50-50 fight". "Johnson is not getting any younger while Clinton has the title now so I think he has grown in confidence and he's improved slightly as a fighter," champ Calzaghe said. "I honestly think it's a 50-50 fight. "Maybe I want Glen Johnson to win because he's a bigger name in America, he's knocked out Roy Jones and he's beaten Antonio Tarver. "So Clinton Woods domestically would be a good fight, but worldwide and in the States it wouldn't mean much because Johnson is the big name." |
