COLWYN Bay teacher Rhian Davies is in Switzerland this weekend for the International Triathlon Union's world age-group championships. Rhian, a member of the Carneddau club, only took up the sport in 2004, but last weekend won the Welsh sprint triathlon age-group title in Porthcawl. In Lausanne she will contest the 30-34 age category over the Olympic distance course - a 1,500m open water swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run. It will be the second time Rhian has competed in the finals, having travelled to Hawaii last year. For local athletes the weekend's programme begins tonight with the fourth and final race in Deestriders' Off-Road Grand Prix. Tomorrow is the annual Llyn Brenig race, and this week's rain should add a bit of interest to the 9.5-mile multi-terrain run. But the biggest field of the weekend will be at Caernarfon on Sunday when Eryri Harriers host the North Wales 10k championships. Competitors will be hoping the wind is not too strong on the wide-open stretches of the course alongside the Straits. Also on Sunday is the Source of the Severn nine-mile trail race at Llanidloes, while local track and field athletes will also be in action in the Cheshire League at Ashton. |
