BOXING: WELSH champion Aaron Thomas, from Mochdre, proved he can compete with the best in Britain when he won a bronze medal at the Four Nations Amateur Boxing Championships in Glasgow last weekend. Thomas, who will be 24 on Sunday, was the only North Walian to qualify after his thrilling displays in the Welsh Senior ABAs in January which won him the national welter-weight crown. The Four Nations brings together the best of the home countries' amateur talent and although Thomas, who boxes for Clwyd ABC, was beaten in both of his contests, he was far from disgraced. In his first bout he lost on points against Scotsman Fundo Mahura, who towered over Thomas in height and had the look of a light-heavyweight. Aaron was then unlucky to lose 17-12 on points to England's Steven Briggs after working well to head and body. Ireland's Jamie Moore won welterweight gold for the fourth year running. The Clwyd ABC coaches were delighted with Aaron's performance and he would definitely benefit from the experience. "The people in Glasgow couldn't believe this is only his third season," they reported. |
