OLYMPICS: TOM JAMES and Bobby Aloysius are returning home from the Athens Olympics with mixed feelings. Although both experienced the full glory of the 2004 games for the first time, the athletes failed to make a lasting impact on their events. Wrexham rower James belatedly made his debut for the Great Britain team in the men's eights after missing the heats through illness. James, 20, was part of the squad trying to emulate the triumphant Sydney team of four yearsago, but the 2004 class failed to make the final. Yet far from being downhearted, James and his fellow young oarsman could take heart from the battling spirit they showed in the semi-finals. After a bad start, the eights moved from last to third position following a superb middle section of the 2000m course. But it was not enough to overtake second-placed Germany and only the top two qualified. Meanwhile, Indian high jumper Aloysius, who is studying at NEWI, cleared 1.85m in the qualifying round but it was too little to see her through to the final against the world's best. Aloysius, 30, combines a sports and exercise science degree with her training programme. Last year she won the silver medal in the first ever Afro-Asian Games. |
