SUNDAY was a night to remember for fighters trained at the Caerwys-based Russ Williams gym when a Thai and kick-boxing tournament took place at Chester racecourse in front of a packed crowd. Among the highlights of the evening was a spectacular performance from 21 stone 6ft 6ins man mountain Damien Robinson. He was up against Shaun O'Reilly from Ireland and won the bout in explosive style with a knockout in the first round. "It was a great atmosphere and Damien did fantastic. He is a lad with a tremendous future ahead of him," said a delighted Williams. "The sport is very big overseas and there is particularly strong interest in the heavyweight division so there is a lot of potential for Damien." A number of other fighters who train under Williams' expert tutorage were taking part in the evening. Jimmy Parry won his fight on points, and North West schoolboy champion Ryan Collins stopped his opponent in the third round. Two of Williams' students earned draws - Will Killow and Gareth Lloyd. "I am proud of all of them. It was a big night and they put in tremendous displays, earning great credit for themselves." Williams said that the event attracted a strong contingent of supporters from the Vale who made the journey over to Chester to cheer the local fighters on. "The lads have been working very hard getting themselves in great shape. They have had the week off now and then will get back to training again." Williams said another Thai and kick-boxing event is being held shortly. It will be hosted at the Holywell Leisure centre in November. He hopes that all five of his students who competed in Chester will take part in that evening. * If anyone would like further information on classes at Williams' gym in Caerwys he can be contacted on 01352 720010 or 07814516102. |
