Aberystwyth man wins Urdd Crown

May 30 2008

By Steve Stratford

DEWI Huw Owen, Aelwyd Pantycelyn, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, won the crown at Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s National Eisteddfod in Conwy today.

Born in Aberystwyth, Huw was educated at Ysgol Rhydypennau, Bow Street, Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig, Aberystwyth, and Aberystwyth University, where he graduated with a first class degree in Welsh. He is now working on an MPhil essay on Winnie Parry’s first novel, Sioned. Huw has strong family connections with the village of Caerfarchell, near St David’s, and it is here, in the family home, that his parents now live.

To fund his studies, Huw works for Mercator – he is one of the team that monitors S4C’s programmes. He is a member of CYD’s National Executive Committee, and has taught seminars to second language Welsh students at the university.

Huw enjoys playing pool, spending time in Aberystwyth’s various cafés, reading and trying to play golf! This is the first time he’s competed for the Crown at the Urdd Eisteddfod.

Eigra Lewis Roberts and Cefin Roberts were today’s adjudicators, and commented: "Without a doubt here is a special talent. He is funny, sarcastic and experimental."

Ceri Elen, Aelwyd CF1, Cardiff came second, and Sioned Elin Hughes from Llandrindod came third. This year, the replica of the crown was given by Ceir Cymru and Brodwaith Cyf, and today’s ceremony was sponsored by HSBC.
