Live rock gig marks end of Urdd in Llandudno

May 30 2008

By Steve Stratford

A LIVE rock gig will mark the end of this week's Urdd National Eisteddfod on Saturday evening. Venue Cymru in Llandudno will host the gig, with Radio Luxembourg and Gwibdaith Hen Frân headlining.

"Local people and young Eisteddfod competitors across Wales have worked so hard during the last few months either organising, fundraising, or rehearsing for the event," said Derfel Thomas, Conwy County Urdd Eisteddfod’s Youth Committee Chairman. "That is one of the reasons why the Eisteddfod’s Youth Committee were keen to arrange this gig at the end of a fantastic week of competing! We are extremely lucky that two of the best Welsh bands have agreed to perform.

"Assisting us with the gig arrangements are the team at Menter Iaith Sir Conwy, and we are extremely grateful to the gig’s sponsor this year, Aberystwyth production company In the Dark Productions."

Gwibdaith Hen Frân is a well established group, and although they have only been playing together for two years, the band has already got a huge following. Phil Bach, Robi Buckley and Paul Toms have had success with their catchy original anthems such as Trôns dy Dad (Your Dad’s Pants) and Coffi Du (Black Coffee). The ukelele plays a strong role in their music, and the band use George Formby, a famous comedian in the 1930s and 40s and renowned for using the instrument, as an inspiration.

With Radio Luxembourg, a psychedelic pop band from West Wales, also performing during the evening, there will be enough variety for the over 18-year-olds. Radio Luxembourg has gained great success following an eventful year performing at Glastonbury and in the BBC's Electric Proms. No doubt Lisa Magic a Porva will be chanted into the early hours on Llandudno’s promenade on Sunday morning!

To ensure your tickets priced at £7, book in advance by calling 07811 048992. The evening begins at 9pm, and is open to over-18s only. A late bar will be available.
