THE Conservative think tank Policy Exchange gives a real clue to Tory thinking. The 1979 to 1997 Conservative government destroyed the economies of Wales, the North and Scotland taking with it communities built around mining, steel and engineering. Cities like Liverpool were starved of funding and their councils abolished because they had the audacity to keep voting Labour and oppose the destructive economic policies of the Tory government. Move to London? If anything the exodus is in the opposite direction with Londoners moving north to booming cities and cheaper housing than “darn sarf”. If people are naïve enough to return the Tories to government when it is as clear their basic philosophy is unchanged from the days of Thatcher then I despair. Old Etonians fill the majority of places in Eton Dave’s shadow cabinet, that should be enough to warn anyone that a return to the crew that believe that they are “born to rule” will return us all to the politics of destruction, greed and selfishness. We must return to traditional Labour values, those who cling to the Thatcherite policies of New Labour should go to their natural home in the Tory Party, there is then a chance we can win the next election and start winning back the local authorities we lost to the Conservatives and their running mates the “Independents”.
