Problems with tenants

Aug 13 2008

by Our Correspondent, Rhyl Visitor

IN response to Chris Ruane’s article. I am a landlord in the West End of Rhyl, and have been in the business for over 12 years.

I agree with you that there are some bad HMOs in Rhyl and they do need to be sorted out. I live in my property, so if there are any problems in the house, with the tenants or house maintenance, I deal with it.

I am sorry my friend, you do not understand everything.

Some people, through their past experiences, are very happy to be living in a bedsit. All the tenants that have been in my house have been happy with me. But yes, I have had some pretty bad ones, Clwyd-Alyn, Wales and West, and Denbighshire Council, you lot get all the money that you need.

It’s you that have made a hash of this town, not struggling private landlords. I’ve seen it all.

You get all sorts of people in, there’s drunks in your property and you get all the money you need to maintain your properties and you don’t seem to care who you have in, as long as you get your money for the rent.

I have to pay the council rates, plus water rates and all the other maintenance bills you have not to do.

Please do not try to throw good private landlords out of business.

We are only trying to make a living in this depressed area of Rhyl.

That’s all I’ve got to say for now, so I will not go into the white elephant Children’s Village on the front.

Drop the rates there and you will have a booming business, it’s that easy.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Responsible pet owners

I am absolutely fed-up of the comments made, by certain members of the community, about dogs and their owners.

Even when out walking, if looks are anything to go by, it really feels like we have become second class citizens if we own a dog.

I refer to the comments made by your reader in the Visitor last week……. “Hopefully now myself and other law-abiding members of the community will be able to take our little children and grandchildren onto the beach without suddenly having to grab them and hold them above our heads out of harm’s reach from dog off a lead that is jumping up at them.”

It is very sad if you think that every dog off a lead is a vicious brute! Most dog owners are very responsible and law-abiding people.

They make every effort to look after their pets responsibly, exercising them, picking up every time/disposing of those little black bags and generally keeping their dogs under control.

I exercise my “non-vicious” dogs on the beach every single day.

They are on the lead in the restricted areas and off the lead, enjoying a good run, in the designated areas.

If people don’t like dogs and are worried about them being off a lead then don’t walk in the unrestricted areas.

Fun-packed beach party

I wish to congratulate the organisers of Party on the Beach for an extremely enjoyable evening at a very reasonable price.

The Cavern Beat were particularly brilliant and it was a real treat to see them perform in Prestatyn.

However, I have to say that I nearly avoided going after reading the article in last week's Visitor, in which Mike German predicted widespread chaos at the event.

I suspect this article put off a good many other people from attending, as I was sad to see only a couple of hundred present during the evening despite good weather.

Did Mr German have a political motive in his predictions?

They certainly don’t seem to be based on much evidence. There were no four-hour riots, mayhem, drugs or fires that I witnessed.

There were a huge number of stewards, security guards, PCSOs, police, and an ambulance. None were needed and I can honestly say I did not see the slightest hint of anti-social behaviour, just people enjoying themselves.

Mr German suggested that other councillors shared his view which made a few people I heard make comment on what a bunch of killjoys local councillors are: a shame since I spotted at least two local councillors in the audience.

Once again – thank you to the event’s organisers for putting so much effort into such a top-notch event locally.

I shall ignore any comments Mr Germans makes on similar events in the future and would encourage other readers to do the same.

What a miserable world we would live in if no-one ever had any fun just in case something went wrong...

Staff discrimination

I READ the recent article regarding Clwyd Leisure’s racial discrimination against a long-serving member of staff.

It appears this man had worked in those centres for over 34 years so to discriminate against him because of his race and disability is disgusting.

To have him followed for 47 days is an utter disgrace. How much did this cloak-and-dagger stuff cost from our council tax?

This much I am sure of, neither myself nor my family will ever be visiting the Sun Centre or the Nova while they are being managed by these people.
