Crimewave on horizon across Denbighshire

A WAVE of petty crime could soon be sweeping across Denbighshire, according to a community leader.

Last week, parliamentary politicians speculated on how the “credit crunch” could cause a steep rise in criminal activity.

And Diana Hannam, who represents Rhyl East as well as serving on Denbighshire’s Social Services and Housing Scrutiny Committee, is worried at the possibility of rising low-level crime sweeping the county.

In an e-mail to her fellow councillors, she wrote: “ I noted the figures refer to violence against the person, vehicle theft and burglary, but not noted in statistics. Are offences such as petty crime, for example, stealing purses?

“I mention this subject because a lot of theft occurs in this way when people go shopping, especially when they visit their local supermarkets. It happens in our local store.

“The speed and ability of these people to steal a purse undetected is a practised art.

“The theft of an elderly person’s pension can have a serious impact [on their ability] to financially survive, for instance food and heating.”

Cllr Hannam wants to mount a campaign to warn residents to be on their guard.

“There needs to be a public awareness campaign warning the public against this type of crime,” she said.

“During the Christmas season, when out and about – the mind thinking of things to do – it’s easy not to notice you are being targeted.

“When you decide to have a coffee break, watch out for individuals sitting at nearby tables watching to see if you place your handbag within easy reach.

“This sadly is the nature of our society today. To avoid becoming a victim, be aware of your immediate surroundings.

“This is the message which should be seen and heard in all our communities.”
