RHYL 37 BANGOR 15 WRU DIVISION TWO NORTH SPECTATORS at Y Waen on Saturday were treated to a display of open, expansive rugby which brought Rhyl a well-deserved victory. After conceding an early penalty, Dragons winger Jim Edwards was able to finish a flowing move to put the home side in front. The dominance of the Rhyl scrum, formidably anchored by a front row of Tim Prior, Grant Salisbury and Oli Cawfry and ably marshalled by Barry Picton at scrum-half, provided the perfect platform for outside-half Shaks Ngwenya to crash over for a second try. A further touchdown for hooker Grant Salisbury – his first in 13 years in Rhyl colours – was followed by Bangor taking advantage of a home lapse to make it 15-8 at the break. Rhyl continued to dominate after the turnaround in both loose and tight exchanges and an early move, involving both forwards and backs, allowed vice-captain Dave Argles to crash over. A sharp sniping try from Picton at the base of a ruck was quickly added to by all-action flanker Lee Craig, John Badham delivering the conversion. A further try always looked likely and was duly delivered in fluid and impressive style by centre Ben Morris in his first senior match as captain. Rhyl 1st XV travel to Rhosllanerchrugog this Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm. SHOTTON 39 RHYL 2ND XV 5 DOGGED determination, defence and discipline were the order of the day for Geezer Davies’ men on Saturday at Deeside. Fielding an experimental side of new and experienced players, some early season nerves and rustiness saw Rhyl fall behind to some impressive back play from Shotton who quickly notched three early tries and a conversion. The visitors responded well with forwards and backs combining nicely, but the Steelmen added a further converted try on the stroke of half-time. A fine solo try by the Shotton scrum-half after the break urged Rhyl forward and a well-deserved score soon followed. Taking the ball from a penalty, the impressive Tim Davies crashed into the Shotton defensive line and quick recycling of the ball by the forwards saw Keith Jones pick out the surging run of Mark Prime for the flanker to cross near the posts. Rhyl 2nd XV are at home to Mold this Saturday, 2.30pm start. |
