PORT TALBOT TOWN v PRESTATYN TOWN WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE SATURDAY 2.30pm THIS Saturday brings Prestatyn’s first long trip to South Wales in the Welsh Premier when they visit Port Talbot. Leaving on a coach at 7.30am and arriving back home at 11pm will be a whole new ball game to the majority of this Seasiders squad. Getting a good result at the GenQuip Stadium will certainly make the arduous journey back to North Wales much more bearable. Port Talbot joined the League of Wales in 2000/01 and since finishing a lowly 16th in their first season have comfortably retained their status since. Managed by Nicky Tucker, the Steelmen enjoyed their best ever finish at this level last season when they came fourth. Their squad includes impressive striker Martin Rose, consistently good goalkeeper Kristian Rogers and towering defenders Matthew Rees and Lee Surman. Prestatyn missed out on a chance to climb the table last Friday when their home match against NEWI Cefn Druids was postponed two hours before kick-off as the groundsman could not mark the Bastion Road pitch due to the heavy rain. The extra week’s break will allow Prestatyn striker Jon Fisher-Cooke further injury recovery time and he comes into contention for a place on the bench at least at Victoria Road. Otherwise player manager Neil Gibson hopes to have a full squad to choose from. Last night (Tuesday) the Seasiders were set to visit TNS in the League Cup, returning to a ground where they lost so gallantly 2-0 in the WPL less than a fortnight ago. Town began their League Cup campaign with a 1-0 home defeat against Gap Connah’s Quay last Tuesday (see report page 50). |
