RHYL v HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE SATURDAY 2.30pm RAMPANT Rhyl are on the verge of rewriting their Welsh Premier history. If the Lilywhites beat Haverfordwest on Saturday and make it five straight wins it will represent their best ever start to a WPL season. As recently as 2006/07 the Lilies won their opening four matches but were then thrashed 6-0 at Llanelli in their fifth. This term Allan Bickerstaff’s side have four straight victories under their belts – 12 goals scored and just one conceded – and are top of the table. Even a draw against Haverfordwest would make it 13 points out of a possible 15 and therefore Rhyl’s best start in 15 seasons at this level, but they will want to set a new record in style. “We’re looking forward to the game,” said Bickerstaff. “We’ve not got a midweek match so that will give us an opportunity to have two good training sessions to prepare ourselves for Haverfordwest. “All the squad is fit and having Matthew Williams back in training on Thursday (see main story) is a great boost.” Haverfordwest, managed by former Manchester United and Cardiff City defender Derek Brazil, have made a decent start to the current campaign, presently lying mid-table. They recently picked up a commendable 1-1 draw at Bangor, but are known to be defensive-minded and will probably set out to frustrate Rhyl and play for a point. In Jack Christopher, however, they have one of the WPL’s most promising strikers. Rhyl and Haver have met 22 times in the Welsh Premier and the Lilywhites lead by 11 wins to five with six draws. County were a one-time bogey side for the Lilies, but Rhyl are now unbeaten in eight clashes in all competitions against them. |
