RHYL LADIES 7 PENLLYN LADIES 2

HOCKEY FRIENDLY

AFTER losing 4-3 to division one Dysynni recently, current North Wales Division Two side Rhyl had an excellent win in this pre-season friendly against promoted Penllyn.

The Denbighshire girls made the perfect start when Lydia Parry drove the ball down the left and slipped it to Lucy Edwards at the left side of the D who fired into the bottom right corner.

Just elevated to division one, Penllyn equalised from a short corner to make it all square at half time.

Lucy Edwards made it 2-1 within 20 seconds of the restart with a shot that went in off the keeper’s foot.

Hannah Bateman, in front of keeper, received a hit from the top of the D via Laura Houlston and deflected home for Rhyl’s third.

Bateman added another when she received a return pass from Sophie Edwards and struck into the left-hand bottom corner.

Penllyn pushed numbers up front to score their second before Sophie and Lucy Edwards played one-twos up the pitch and Lucy swept home to complete a hat trick.

When Megan Lovett pushed the ball up the right and crossed into Bateman she too netted her third goal.

Bateman missed a penalty flick, but a Houlston strike from the top of the D made it seven.

All the Rhyl ladies played excellent especially new players Lydia Parry, Eleri Cooling and Katie Read.

Team: Sue Pennington (GK), Sarah Shepherd, Anneka O’Connor, Eleri Cooling, Katie Read, Lucy Edwards, Sophie Edwards, Laura Houlston, Megan Lovett, Hannah Bateman and Lydia Parry.

Fielding a mixture of first and second team players, Rhyl Ladies finished third in a recent North Wales tournament. Lucy Morris scored the winner in a 1-0 defeat of Buckley, then Rhyl lost 2-0 to Wrexham and 1-0 versus Northop Hall.

Team: Sue Pennington (GK), Katie Read, Lis Taylor, Eleri Cooling, Anneka O’Connor, Lucy Morris, Megan Lovett, Lydia Parry, Josie Jones, Jess Haywood and Becca Topping.
