Bowling alley is a big strike!

Dec 27 2007

by Martin Williams, Rhyl Visitor

THE final piece of a multi-million pound redevelopment at Prestatyn’s Ffrith Beach was unveiled at the weekend.

The revamped American Astro Bowl 10-pin bowling alley opened at the Victoria Road West venue on Saturday, the latest in a series of new features at the once-lamented attraction.

As well as the bowling centre, owners Ffrith Leisure Ltd have opened an Italian restaurant, a soft play area, mini-golf, quad biking circuits and other sports and leisure facilities.

The Visitor was unable to contact Ffrith director Harry Orenstein at the time of going to press, but ward member Mike German has praised the new centre.

“This is welcome news, and long overdue,” said Cllr German, a member of the county’s Ffrith Beach Liaison Committee.

“We’ve been waiting 10-15 years for the regeneration of this area and then everything has come at once, it’s fantastic for Prestatyn and tourism on the whole in Denbighshire.

“And what better place than the Ffrith to put it? It’s bang in the centre of the county’s coastal area.

“The centre will be used by people of all ages and I for one look forward to taking my family down there for a game or two – this is a brilliant Christmas present for Prestatyn.”

The nearest other bowling alley is at Llandudno, which is a long trek for Prestatyn-based Terry Barr and his teammates, who play in 10-pin bowling’s National Blind League.

“We hope to be using this centre in the coming months as it’s been refurbished,” said Terry.

“At the moment it’s a four-hour round-trip by bus to Llandudno, which is difficult enough for anyone, let alone a blind person.

“This is fantastic new for us all.”
