Top prize for word count campaign

Jan 23 2008

By Justine Bailey

A CREATIVE youngster has been awarded first place in Conwy county in a Wales-wide competition.

Read a Million Words in Wales is a reading initiative by the Basic Skills Agency with the aim of encouraging children to read more, from books to magazines, to newspapers and road signs.

As part of the initiative, youngsters throughout Wales were recently asked to design a Wordmobile – a crazy new vehicle to help drive Read a Million Words in Wales.

Children sent their entries to their local education authorities and the overall winner for Conwy County Council was Megan Hesketh from Ysgol Glan Morfa, Abergele.

Megan was not aware she was a winner until it was announced in the school assembly, where she was presented with a prize of £50. The school also received a cash boost – £500 to spend on books and reading materials.

Megan will now be entered into the national competition in Wales.

Her idea for a Wordmobile was described by judges as original and fun and featured the school’s mascot Edword the Dragon, standing on the roof with sensors to check if children were reading.
