Efforts to offer more help to carers

Feb 20 2008

By Martin Williams

A STRATEGY which will eventually shape how services for carers are run in Denbighshire is currently being drawn up by the local authority.

The plan will look at the existing range of services for carers who care for relatives, friends and neighbours who have a long-term illness or disability, and will consider how services are carried out in the future.

It will also look at the wider issues around raising awareness and recognition of carers and their needs, and how this can be achieved.

According to the 2001 census, there are just under 11,000 carers in Denbighshire alone, but only a small percentage come forward and ask for support.

Denbighshire County Council funds a range of services for carers both within the statutory and voluntary sectors, but is very aware of the thousands who may not recognise themselves as such, or who may be reluctant to seek help and support.

The authority says it is important that carers are given an opportunity to contribute to the development of the strategy, and a questionnaire is now available to enable them to give their views and comments on the types of services and support that they feel are important.

Carers can also get involved by attending a stakeholder day on Thursday, February 28, at Oriel House Hotel, St Asaph, between 10am and 2pm.

The strategy is set to be finalised and released this summer.

Cabinet lead member for social services, Councillor Pauline Dobb, said: "Carers are often the unsung heroes in our midst and we hope that with the development of the carers strategy we will be in a position to give them our support and tailor services to meet their needs."
