ENERGY chiefs and ambulance staff have joined forces to help the Visitor’s older readers guard against the cold weather. New figures from the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership show that 100,000 Welsh over-60s fear their health may be at risk because their homes are not warm enough in winter. But now the Partnership is joining forces with the Welsh Ambulance Service to combat your concerns. "Cold weather can have a detrimental effect on older people’s health, and as these figures reveal, this a major concern to one in six over-60s across Wales," said Partnership spokesman, Iwan Rhys Roberts explains: "We have prepared the ‘Your Winter Warm Up’ information pack to address these problems. The pack is full of useful information on what older people can do to make sure that they are warm and safe during the winter months. "We are very glad to announce today that we are working with the Welsh Ambulance Service to distribute these packs directly to those people who will benefit most from receiving one." The packs contain a step-by-step guide to keeping your home warm, a guide to claiming benefits, top 10 tips for keeping warm during the winter months, a guide to Help the Aged services, information on home heating schemes and grants offered by British Gas and two thermometers – one for your bedroom and one for your living room. Julie Winspear, National Patient Care Services Manager for the Welsh Ambulance Service, added: "PCS staff will have the packs available to give to patients and they are in the ideal position to be able to identify those who may be at risk in cold weather. "They will also take the packs to day units across the area so that they are available to those who don’t use ambulance transport. "This positive initiative will provide greater access to this valuable information to more communities in Denbighshire and Conwy. |
