Homespun release long-awaited debut album

Mar 19 2008

By Martin Williams

IT’S been a long time coming, so was it worth the wait? Homespun have released several demos over the years but completing their first album, entitled Sex Ready Mind Control, has been an epic journey for the talented three-piece – Terry Foster (lead vox and guitar), brother Tony (drums) and bass player Damien Sayell.

A struggle perhaps, not because of a lack of material, but a series of managerial issues and constant touring.

Add to this a determined attempt to change their name back from Fear and Loathing (which made them sound like a bland EMO outfit) after a legal wrangle with The Beautiful South, and trying to get everyone in the right place at the right time, and you can see why it’s taken so long.

Well, the time is now, and with a new team behind them "The Spun" have produced a dazzling collection of indie/rock that grabs your attention and kicks you in the cajones from the first notes of Badman, an unapologetic, frenzied blast of punk that bristles with Foster’s angry vocals.

A Friend Of Ours is as catchy as a glue Frisbee, while Better Take A Holiday is a proper lads anthem, a real romper stomper.

Sayell comes into his own on Taken, my own personal favourite. This is a swinging feast of bass sprinkled with guitar hooks, followed by White Lies and the commercial Wednesday’s Child. Both are strong in every department, especially the slick production and, once again, Foster’s no-nonsense singing style.

There’s a tip of the hat to Nirvana (Stay Away) and Greenday on 9th Apology, which precedes I’ll Let You Know, probably the weakest track on this impressive collection.

The Dance Hall is a little forgettable, though Tony Foster shines. His control is flawless, it’s a drumming clinic.

Overall, this is a fine first album from one of the best – and easily the most vociferous, bands in the North Wales region.

Sex Ready Mind Control is priced £8 inc p&p. Visit the official album website at www.sexreadymindcontrol.com or www.myspace.com/homespuntb

The album is also on itunes and is listed under Homespun [the.band].
