The King is full of burning love for Rhyl

Mar 12 2008

By Martin Williams

RHYL will be visited by rock royalty in the coming weeks. Gordon Hendricks will play the Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl on March 21, supported by his all-star band, Red Alert.

Featuring many of Elvis’ greatest hits, the two-hour show has been a hit up and down the country, and Gordon looks forward to visiting North Wales for a blockbuster performance.

"It’ll be my first time at the Pavilion, and I can’t wait," said Gordon.

"I believe it’s a great theatre with a warm atmosphere. We want to get that place rocking on the night.

"I’ve played across the country – in fact the band are from South Wales – but I’ve never been to Rhyl before and plan to make sure they don’t forget me!"

Gordon won ITV’s Stars in Their Eyes grand final in 2005 with a record number of votes, and has three BBC1 national TV shows under his belt – The World’s Greatest Elvis, The Weakest Link and Graham Norton’s The Big Finish.

In September, 2007, Gordon unveiled a plaque to Elvis at Prestwick Airport, the only place Elvis Presley ever visited in the UK.

Gordon has impressed many people who have worked with Elvis, including his backing singers.

They were so shocked after hearing Gordon sing (in the USA in 2006) that they asked him to return to record an album with them.

Sherrill Neilson who appeared on over 500 occasions with Elvis, has said of Gordon: "Whatever Elvis had, you have it as well".

And Gordon’s performance on Stars In Their Eyes so pleased award-winning songwriter Geoff Morrow that he signed him to his Yellow Records label.

Geoff has written hit songs for Elvis, Barry Manilow, The Carpenters, Billy Fury and many more, but when he saw Gordon’s performance he was moved to say: "Over the years I have heard many Presley impersonators but when Gordon started to sing I actually shivered."

Geoff penned five songs for Elvis, four of which he recorded. The fifth song, Where Would I Be, was written in 1977 but unfortunately Elvis died before he could produce it.

Geoff has given the song to Gordon.

Gordon Hendricks and his five-piece band will perform some of the King’s finest works in a style so reminiscent you will wonder if Elvis himself is on stage.

Tickets from £14.50; contact the box office on 01745 330000.
