PUPILS at an Abergele primary school endured fierce lashing rain and violent storms when they ventured into the great outdoors to mark an important anniversary. Ysgol Glan Morfa is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and to mark the half-century, children planted 50 trees, donated by the Forestry Commission. Head teacher Arwel Roberts described the momentous occasion. "We planted the trees in the middle of a great storm. It took all day because each of the six classes went out in turn to plant. "It was terrible weather, but it didn’t stop us." As well as doing the actual work of planting, children were told about the environment and the importance of trees by Forestry Commission Education Officer, Ffion Hughes. Although they are only saplings at the moment, Mr Roberts believes that if they are cared for properly they will achieve greatness. "In another 50 years, they’ll be looking over us," he said. More celebratory events are planned over the coming year. |
