Comedy legends in the spotlight at Rhyl

Apr 9 2008

by Martin Williams, Rhyl Visitor

SOME of the finest comedians in the land will descend on Rhyl for a stellar night of fun and laugher.

Brendan Riley, Phil Walker, Manuel Martinez and Jo Enright star in The Comedy Shop 2008 tour at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre on April 17, from 7.30pm.

Brendan Riley is typical Liverpudlian – direct, friendly and brash. Like every Scouser, Brendan speaks his mind and the energy and appeal of his stand-up style have made him a sought-after host, compère, actor and comic.

Fellow comedian Phil Walker is much the same.

Award-winning Phil has played everywhere, from a scout hut in Unst in the Shetland Isles to a portable cabin on Mount Alice in the Falkland Islands – he’ll go anywhere for a laugh!

He even once performed in a theatre in Sarajevo to an audience of wartime soldiers on standby, to which he describes: “I’ve played to some tough crowds in my time but they were never armed to the teeth with machine guns, thank God they liked me!”

His act has become a firm favourite with the armed forces and he has toured places such as Kosovo, Kuwait, Bosnia and Germany.

Manuel Martinez is an altogether different proposition.

Cuba’s second biggest export (after the cigars), Manuel is comedy magic at its most surreal and funniest. With his ridiculous mispronunciation of the English language, his work is very reminiscent of Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther movies.

And then there’s the brilliant Jo Enright – a gifted caricaturist who makes much of her dour Brummie roots, but is able to disguise that distinctively rough-edged accent to become anything from her meek Irish mother to a feral Netto shopper.

Tickets are £12.50. Call the box office on 01745 330000 or book online at www.rhylpavilion.co.uk.
