Wallsall 1, Wrexham 0

WREXHAM face a final day showdown with Boston United next Saturday at the Racecourse to preserve their football league status following a narrow defeat to Wallsall this afternoon.

The Dragons could have few complaints about the result in a match of few chances. But they now need at least a point on Saturday to remain in League 2 at the expense of either Boston or Macclesfield.

Wrexham had the better of the first-half chances, with Neil Roberts volleying just wide in the 16th minute, following good work by Simon Spender and Lee McEvilly.

And from a cross immediately afterwards, Steve Evans drove a rasping shot over the Wallsall bar.

The home side were getting little change in midfield, where Jeff Whitley and Danny Williams were winning plenty of the ball and it was not until midway through the second half that they threatened the Dragons' goal.

A mistake by Spender gave Ishmel Demontagnac the opportunity to cross low into the penalty area, but Valentine managed to scramble the ball away from danger.

Wallsall then produced the best move of the match, Trevor Benjamin picking out Martin Butler with a raking pass, but when the striker nodded the ball down, Dean Keates sliced his shot high and wide.

Another good chance went begging from the home side after 36 minutes when Tony Gerrard headed wide a Mark Wright corner.

But the visitors finished the half strongly and the 1,500 travelling fans urged them on when news filtered through that Boston were losing at home.

But the joy was short-lived as Wallsall went ahead in the 61st minute, thanks to a strong run from Wright, who evaded a couple of challenges and forced a fine save from keeper Anthony Williams.

But he was unable to hold the ball and Demontagnac was on hand to sweep home the rebound.

Wrexham did their best to get back on level terms, but they rarely looked capable of breaking down a strong home defence.
