Wrexham 3, Boston United 1

May 5 2007

by Mark Currie, Daily Post, at The Racecourse Ground

Wrexham left it late but they secured their football league status for another season at the Racecourse Ground this afternoon.

But they had to come from behind before condemming opponents Boston United to relegation and for a long time the home side were clearly second best in front of their biggest league crowd for more than 20 years.

Boston made the better start with striker Drewe Broughton causing plenty of problems up front and he was not far away from opening the scoring after seven minutes.

But Wrexham came back through man of the match Matty Done, who flashed a powerful effort just past the far post.

United goalkeepr Andy Marriott, who played at the Racecourse for five years, then had to race out of his area to prevent Neil Roberts from putting the Dragons in front, and Michael Proctor headed over the visitors' bar.

Nevertheless, it was United who made the breakthrough six minutes before the break when Morton beat Steve Evans and played the ball through to Francis Green, who steered his shot past Anthony Williams.

The Dragons responsed quickly and Mark Jones saw his curling effort well saved by Marriott at the expense of a corner and when Simon Spender's looping header seemed destined for the top corner, Boston skipper Paul Ellender looked up to clear off the line.

And the final act of the opening period saw Done race 70 yards before crossing into the penalty area where Neil Roberts just over-ran the ball.

But Wrexham equalised in the 55th minute after Marriott made another fine save, punching away a Steve Clement header. Danny Williams looked favourite to reach the rebound but he was barged in the back by Garden for a penalty, which was slammed home by Brian Valentine.

The Boston keeper was in outstanding form, turning a Mark Jones shot onto the bar as the home side went for the kill, and Proctor headed wide.

In a last throw of the dice, Boston pushed men forward and should have scored from a corner but Ellender cleared the crossbar from less then 10 yards, and Wrexham's nerves were setlled in the 87th minute by Chris

Llewellyn who cut inside to score a fine individual goal and, a minute from the end, Proctor wrapped it up with a header - much to the relief of everyone in the stadium.
